Our production line has begun full-scale output of the CX897, an 18mm snap-off blade utility knife designed for consistent performance across paper, cardboard, film, and light wallpaper cutting. The launch reflects an ongoing push inside the factory to pair simple, durable tooling with packaging that ships ready for retail without extra finishing work on the buyer's end.
Among the many blade widths produced in our workshop, 18mm remains the size most requested by distributors stocking general-purpose cutting tools. It strikes a balance between the control needed for detail work — trimming photos, scoring mat board, opening cartons — and the rigidity required so the blade doesn't flex or snap under normal pressure. The CX897 uses a segmented blade with pre-scored break lines, so a dull tip can be snapped off cleanly with the built-in notch on the housing rather than requiring a full blade change.
The handle is molded in two pieces, a bright yellow upper shell paired with a black lower grip section, which also happens to make the tool easier to spot on a cluttered desk or in a toolbox. A ridged thumb slider locks the blade at several depth positions, and the housing includes a rear thumb-rest pattern so the knife doesn't twist in hand during longer cutting passes.
Each unit passes through five main stages before it reaches the packing line. The sequence below is the same one our quality team audits weekly to confirm blade hardness and housing fit stay within tolerance batch after batch.
SK5 carbon steel coil is inspected for thickness and surface consistency before stamping.
Segments are die-cut and scored, then heat-treated to set edge hardness.
Blades pass through a precision grinder to establish a uniform bevel angle.
ABS resin is injection-molded into the two-tone handle shells.
Sliders, springs and blades are fitted by hand, then function-tested unit by unit.
Feedback collected from returning distributors over the past few seasons points to four settings where this particular knife size sells fastest. Rather than positioning it as a single-purpose tool, we designed the packaging copy to speak to all four at once.
Opening mail, trimming documents, and scoring folded card stock without needing scissors nearby.
Slicing tape seals and breaking down cardboard cartons quickly during high-volume unpacking.
Fine control for cutting foam board, vinyl sheets, and layered paper projects.
Trimming wallpaper edges and lining material where a clean, straight cut matters most.

"What we hear most from long-term partners isn't a request for a fancier knife — it's consistency. Every CX897 that leaves the line this month has to cut, lock, and snap the same way as the one that shipped last quarter."
— Production Manager, Cutting Tools DivisionBeyond the standard yellow blister pack shown here, the CX897 can be produced with a printed insert card carrying a distributor's own branding, or packed into mixed-color assortments for display boxes. Handle colors, blade counts per pack, and card artwork are all adjustable on the production side, and sample cards are typically available before a full production run is confirmed. Buyers working on private label programs can request a proof of the printed card ahead of committing to a bulk order.
What does the "18mm" measurement refer to on this knife?
It's the width of the blade itself, not the handle. An 18mm segmented blade is the most common size used in general-purpose utility knives sold for office, packaging, and light craft cutting.
Can the blade be replaced once all segments are used?
Yes. The housing opens from the rear thumb-rest section, allowing the spent blade to be removed and a new 18mm replacement blade inserted.
Is there a safety lock to keep the blade from extending accidentally?
The ridged slider holds the blade at fixed depth positions, including fully retracted, which keeps the edge covered when the knife isn't in use.
Does the factory support custom blister card printing for distributors?
Custom insert card artwork, private label branding, and mixed handle-color packs can be arranged, with a printed sample typically produced before a full run begins.
